You work hard as a photographer, and it is very important that you are in control of your work in the way that you want to be. Licensing your photography is very important, since it allows you to clearly lay out how your photos can be used and by whom. Here are some tips on how you should go about licensing your photography. 

Determine the Licence Components

The first thing that you should do is make sure that you know what usage rights you should outline in your photography license. You will need to describe the ways in which your photos can be used. For example, do you want your images to be used commercially or editorially? 

You should also determine if the usage rights for this photo are exclusive or non-exclusive. If you give someone exclusive rights, then they are the only ones who can use that photo. Non-exclusive rights allow you to license the photos to multiple people. You can also outline how long photos can be used and where. 

Write the Contract

This may sound intimidating, but writing an agreement for licensing your photography is easier than you think. You simply need to make sure that all the components of a license type are outlined in a licensing agreement. You can hire a lawyer to help you if you want, but that’s not always necessary. 

Determine Fees When Licensing Your Photography

A photography license can lay out how you want to be paid and how much. The price for use of a photo can depend on a number of factors. When determining the fee for the rights of a photo, you should take a look at the price list of others in your line of work. 

One way to determine the amount you are owed for the use of a photo is by setting a percentage of the revenue that someone makes from the use of the photo. You may also need to negotiate a bit regarding price. 

Sell the Photos

Since you have your photography license all ready, all you need to do is sell your image licenses. There are a few different ways to do this. In some cases, you and a client will work out a custom exclusive rights licensing agreement. In other cases, you can put your work on websites or connect with other clients and tie that work to specific license agreements. 

You can try to find magazines or other publications that would be interested in your work. You can also post your licensed photos to your website or to stock photography websites.
